Why your Google Business Profile matters more than your website
For most local service businesses, the Google Business Profile drives more calls and messages than the website does. When someone searches "plumber near me" or "edmonton window cleaning", Google shows a map pack with three businesses. Your profile is what appears there. Your website usually does not.
The map pack is where decisions happen
A person searching on their phone is often standing in a driveway or sitting in a kitchen with a problem right now. They see three options, each with a rating, a phone number, and photos. They call one. The website rarely gets opened before that call happens.
That means the profile is doing the selling. Yet most businesses treat it like a listing they filled out once in 2019.
What the profile actually signals
Google ranks local results based on three broad things:
- Relevance: does your category, description, and services list match what the person asked for?
- Distance: how close are you to the searcher? You cannot control this, but your service areas tell Google where you work.
- Prominence: reviews, photos, posts, and activity over time. This is the part that compounds.
The first two get you into the pack. Prominence decides whether you stay there.
The compounding part
Every review you answer, every photo you add, every question you answer in the Q&A section adds to it. Profiles that get touched weekly tend to climb. Profiles that sit still tend to drift down as competitors stay active.
If your website gets more attention than your profile, you are investing in the second most important page you own. Fix the order and the phone starts ringing more.
